AGFACTS Newsbrief Summary – March 2016

  • The current size of the South Africa tractor park, measured in terms of tractive power, is approximately 6.62 million kilowatts, 2.8% up on last year.  This is significantly (approximately 51%) up on the figure of 4.37 million kilowatts ten years ago.
  • The average power of tractors in the South Africa tractor park was 71.4 kW twenty years ago (in 1995), 70.6 kW ten years ago (in 2005) increasing to the current 76.9 kW.
  • The overall trend in the year-on-year price change of agricultural machinery is still upwards. The current overall year-on-year increase in prices (smoothed) is 12.8%.
  • The overall wheat crop is expected to be 1.457 million tons in the 2015 season, 16.7% down on last year.
  • The second production estimate for commercial maize for the 2015/2016 season is 7.256 million tons.  This is 27.1% down on the 2014/2015 production season.
  • Year-to-date tractor sales for the two months to February are 2.2% down on the same period last year.
