AGFACTS Newsbrief Summary – March 2017

    • The current size of the South Africa tractor park, measured in terms of tractive power, is approximately 6.74 million kilowatts, 1.7% up on last year.  This is significantly (approximately 49%) up on the figure of 4.52 million kilowatts ten years ago.
    • The average power (smoothed) of tractors in the South Africa tractor park was 68.3 kW twenty years ago (in 1996), 75.8 kW ten years ago (in 2006) increasing to the current 79.5 kW.
    • The overall trend in the year-on-year price change of agricultural machinery is still downwards. The current overall year-on-year increase in prices (smoothed) is 4.7%.
    • The overall wheat crop is expected to be 1.910 million tons in the 2016 season, 32.6% up on last year.
    • The first production estimate for commercial maize for the 2016/2017 season is 13.918 million tons.  This is 78.9% up on the 2015/2016 production season.
    • Year-to-date tractor sales for the two months to February are 12.1% down on the same period last year.
